Lewis and Clark project ideas

Filed under: Archive: 2009-10 — Mr. Tripodi @ 12:46 pm

If you’re still searching for the right research topic, here are a few ideas to spur your creativity:

Part 1 | Research: Becoming an expert
The goal is for you to learn as much as you can about one part of the expedition.

drouillardsmallTopics of expertise include — but are not limited to — the following:

  • Food
  • Terrain
  • Medicine, illness, and injury
  • Forts
  • Tools and technology
  • Native Americans
  • Wildlife
  • Botany
  • Transportation
  • Camp life
  • Crew members

Part 2 | Project: Sharing your expertise
Below are a few possibilities for your final product.  Keep in mind that you must conduct historical research and include that research in your project.

  • Food
Create a cookbook or record a cooking show, using ingredients available to the Corps of Discovery.  Go interactive by embedding the food into a virtual map, connecting gastronomy to geography.  Or go in depth by examining the edible…
  • Provisions
Create an interactive, illustrated inventory of the expedition.  Examine and explore the list of what the Corps of Discovery packed for the journey.  What did the equipment do?  Who received the gifts?  How was the food preserved for the expedition?  How long did this stuff last?
  • Wildlife, terrain, botany
Make an interactive map that shows where they encountered new (and delicious) species on the journey.  Use journal entries and illustrations for animals they discovered, and modern photos for comparison.  Research historical uses of plants as practiced by the Corps.
  • Medicine, illness, and injury
Using the journals, compare medical treatment of injury and illness to the methods used today.
  • Lodging
    Create a scale model of
Fort Clatsop, Fort Mandan, or Camp Dubois.  Include photos documenting your progress.  Research how the Corps built their lodgings in the early 19th Century.
  • Corps
Make Corps of Discovery trading cards for each member of the expedition, with biographical data on the reverse; or research one member and write a biographical play or comic book about your subject.
  • Then and now
Using CamStudio (or similar screencasting software) and Google Earth, follow the Lewis and Clark trail, narrated with journal entries or an informational voice-over.
  • Native Americans
Research one or more tribes encountered by the expedition.  Make a
travel brochure (like you did for the Colonial travel agency) about the tribe’s/tribes’ resources, climate, and way of life.
  • Transportation
Build a scale model of one of the types of boats used by the Corps.  Document your progress with a Photo Story or a video.
  • Scenario
    Just how creative are you?

Imagine that the Corps of Discovery found themselves stuck in the American wilderness and had to create a permanent settlement.  What stopped them?  Where did they stop, and why?

You’ve studied American settlements (Jamestown, Plymouth) and the Corps of Discovery.  What kind of rules and laws would they have instituted?  How would American history have changed as a result?
